I'm very shocked at how long it has taken me to review these 2 books as they are 2 of my favourite ever vampire novels. I came across them in a cheapie bookshop and was intrigued. They were worth the £1 or so I paid for them and then some! Within the vampire genre, there can be a lot of similar topics and characters in novels and that's where these stand out. This time, the novels revolve around the Marquis de Sade living as a vampire in the modern day. Now that's a huge slice of originality!
Mary Ann Mitchell is an amazing writer. I literally could not put these down once I started reading them. There is a large dose of erotica in them so I wouldn't recommend these to you if you're remotely prudish. Fortunately for me, I'm not. The characters are well written and you feel yourself empathizing and identifying with them. I feel that Ms.Mitchell probably read a few de Sade novels before she wrote this trilogy (I have only read the 1st and 2nd books so far) and that's why he is portrayed so well in her books. He is written as a debauched lecherous and extremely sexual character but he's given balance by his love for his niece, Liliana. All of the characters, in fact, are very multi-faceted which I really like. The books are an addictive mix of horror, action, erotica and even the occasional funny scene which really keep you hooked.
If you are a fan of vampire novels that don't feature mopey, sparkly so-called vampires (not naming names), then you need to read these books!
